Jamison Endorsed by former Speaker Newt Gingrich

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, August 23, 2010

Dave Jamison for Iowa State Treasurer Announces the Endorsement of former Speaker Newt Gingrich

AMES, IOWA – Today, Dave Jamison, current Story County Treasurer and Republican candidate for Iowa State Treasurer received the endorsement of former Speaker of U.S. House Newt Gingrich.

“As I’ve traveled across Iowa meeting and hearing from hardworking Iowans, one thing is resonating: people are tired of the government’s out of control wasteful spending, not just in Washington, D.C. but right here in Iowa,” stated Speaker Gingrich.

Continued Gingrich, “Dave Jamison has made a commitment to put Iowans first again. Dave has served the citizens of Story County, and will be a great watch dog of the people of Iowa’s money and investment. “It’s time for new leadership in Iowa, time for a next generation of leaders, and Dave Jamison will serve Iowa well”.

“I’m honored to have the support of the former Speaker of the U.S. House Newt Gingrich. Speaker Gingrich has been a tireless champion for next generation solutions to the problems facing our country. He is a principled conservative and I’m grateful to have his support”, commented Dave Jamison.

Dave has been the Story County treasurer since 1995 and lives in Ames with his wife, Karen, and their three children.

Retirement Funds Not Teddy Bears

What does a $500 Million dollar IPERS investment made by State Treasure
Michael Fitzgerald get State employees? The world’s largest collection
of stuffed animals, a horse ranch and a house in the same neighborhood
as late night comedian David Letterman. Unfortunately, this
mismanagement of money is no laughing matter. Michael Fitzgerald’s
failure to protect Iowa’s retirement funds has cost the state hundreds
of millions of dollars, most of which will never be recovered.
In October of 2006, the IPERS board, led by Treasurer Fitzgerald,
invested $500 million dollars of Iowa’s retirement funds in Westridge
Capital Management of Santa Barbara, California.
For the next 22 months hard-earned taxpayer dollars were used to supply a
high-end lifestyle for the principals of Westridge, Paul Greenwood and
Stephen Walsh. Greenwood used Iowans’ money to purchase a collection of
1,350 stuffed animals including one teddy bear valued at more than
$80,000. Yes, a teddy bear valued at $80,000.
Fitzgerald claims he did what was necessary to protect Iowa’s
investment. But a simple Internet search would show Westridge was
involved in litigation in Nebraska over the loss of $40 million in state
pension funds. It would also show offshore accounts which are not
standard for pension investments, a host of previous shady deals
starting in 1985 involving Walsh and Greenwood, as well as many other
tell tale signs Westridge did not have Iowans’ best interests in mind.
Greenwood and Walsh have since been charged with securities fraud.
However, these charges won’t bring back all the money Fitzgerald lost
for Iowans. IPERS money will be tied up for years in costly lawsuits and
it is very doubtful the state will even recover half of what was
invested.
Iowans cannot afford to have a Treasurer who lost $500 million dollars
by failing to do simple research. After 28 years of mismanagement it is
time to show Michael Fitzgerald the door. Iowa needs new leadership. As
your next State Treasurer, I will work to ensure investments are secure
and profitable for Iowa.

Political Environment Should Worry Fitzgerald Despite Lead in TIR’s Battleground Poll

In a recent TIR Battleground Poll, Republican nominee for State
Treasurer, Dave Jamison, trails his Democrat opponent by 12 points.
Current State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald leads Jamison 42% to 30%, with
26% of respondents undecided about the race.

As a 28-year incumbent, Fitzgerald is the clear frontrunner in the
race. While his 12-point lead over Jamison is significant, there is
still three full months of campaigning to take place before people go to
the polls. It is also noteworthy that the 28-year incumbent only polls
in the low 40’s. Considering that over a quarter of the electorate are
undecided about the race, Fitzgerald maybe in trouble this fall.

Jamison told TheIowaRepublican.com, “These poll results only solidify
what I have been talking about for the past 8 months. Iowans have lost
confidence in leaders like Michael Fitzgerald and Chet Culver. These
two men are the principle architects of the devastating debt that
plagues our state.”

“The incumbent has had 28 years to connect with Iowans about the
office and his job. He has failed as a trustee and a leader. After
only 8 months, I’ve garnered support from nearly a third of Iowa
voters,” said Jamison.

“Clearly, a majority of Iowans are open to a new state treasurer who
will bring greater transparency, more accountability, increased
visibility and an unwavering commitment to protecting our money. Public
office is a public trust that requires a full-time professional
prepared to stand up for sound fiscal policies that will help grow our
economy and jobs,” Jamison added.

Jamison’s willingness to confront Fitzgerald on the issues and his
performance as the state’s top investment manager makes him a much more
aggressive candidate than Republicans have recruited before.

Jamison then criticized his opponent for his involvement in Governor
Culver’s I-Jobs program. “Michael Fitzgerald is the architect of the
$1.7 billion dollar I-jobs bond scheme. In the coming weeks and months,
as more Iowans learn about Fitzgerald’s key role in plunging our state
into this debt and his $500 million IPERS scandal, I’m confident we will
close to a victory in November. Let there be no doubt – Iowans will
have a clear choice in the race for state treasurer.”

With the top of the Democratic ticket as weak as it has ever been,
Jamison will have the wind at his back as the political environment
favors Republicans and hurts incumbents, especially those who are
charged with protecting taxpayer dollars.

In 2006, Democratic State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald ran unopposed.
Republicans didn’t recruit a candidate despite the belief of many in
the GOP that 2006 was going to be good year at the ballot box.

Four-years earlier, Republicans had nominated an energetic candidate
in Matt Whitaker. Whitaker, a former Iowa Hawkeye football player and
attorney, was a natural on the campaign trail. He also found success in
the fundraising arena, but despite all of the good will among
Republicans, Whitaker garnered only 43% of the vote that year.

For most down-ballot statewide candidates facing an entrenched
incumbent, their success is dependent on how the top of the ticket
candidate performs rather than how well they execute their own
campaigns.

It is not a coincidence that Whitaker’s 43% in the 2002 general
election is almost identical to the 44.5% of the vote that Doug Gross
mustered against Governor Tom Vilsack that year. That was also the
year that Tom Harkin defeated Greg Ganske. Like Gross, Ganske garnered
only 44% of the vote.

Fortunately, Republicans have nominated a strong candidate to run
against Mike Fitzgerald in Jamison. Unlike Whitaker in 2002, Jamison
has the benefit of running for office in a favorable political
environment with a strong statewide ticket that could make it possible
for both himself and the other Republican challengers to send the
Democratic incumbents packing this fall.

Like State Auditor Dave Vaudt and Secretary of Agriculture Bill
Northey, Jamison brings a tremendous amount of credibility to his
campaign. Having served as the Story County Treasurer for 17 years,
there is no doubt that he would be up for the task of running the
Treasurer’s office.

I was hidden from view by the privacy partition at the voting
stand where I was casting my absentee ballot this week in the county courthouse
when I heard those words come floating around the screen.

I peered around the corner to see an older gentleman waving a
sample ballot for the Republican primary in the face of the election worker.
“What can you tell me about these people?” he kept asking her.

Of course, she couldn’t offer any advice other than to contact
the political party. Since I’m pretty
familiar with almost every name on his ballot, I wanted to offer the gentleman
some insight into the character, background and issues of those individuals and
the offices they sought, but Iowa law forbids electioneering at polling
places. No politics in the courthouse...

If the gentleman waving the ballot hasn’t cast his vote yet, I
encourage him to support David Jamison running for State Treasurer, and Matt
Schultz running for Secretary of State.

I’ve known David Jamison for more than a decade and consider him
a friend. He is currently the Story
County Treasurer, and it was in that roll our paths first crossed. As Treasurer, David initiated an on-line
searchable database for county expenses - a good idea for Story County, and
exactly what all taxpayers should have access to.

The race for State Treasurer is important because over $500
Million is missing from the Iowa Public Employee Retirement System (IPERS) and
we taxpayers are on the hook for it.

In a Ponzi scheme, the officers at Westridge Capital Management
used our money to buy things like horse ranches, luxury cars and collectable
teddy bears. More troubling is how they
got our money – our State Treasurer gave it to them. The State Treasurer failed in vetting WCM’s
credentials. The Treasurer is a voting
member of the IPERS Board and custodian of the funds. There was no on-site audit and apparently no
notice that WCM was being sued in Nebraska months before Iowa gave them our money.
Type Westridge Capital Management into a Google search and see what you
find. Apparently our Treasurer never
bothered.

When it comes to state finances I like to think of the Big Three
- Governor, Auditor and Treasurer.
Iowans would benefit by having David Jamison as part of that group. He’s a conservative that has brought
innovation and efficiencies to his county, and I’m confident he will do the
same for all of us.

The first time I met Matt Schultz we didn’t see eye to eye on the
issue that brought about our meeting.
Calling it confrontational would be kind. But in the years since, we’ve set aside that
initial disagreement and I consider Matt a friend. I respect his service on the Council Bluffs
City Council, and admire his activist role within the Republican Party. Matt’s an up and comer who is tenacious,
setting aside time with family to put in the effort a state-wide race requires. He is the candidate we need to nominate if we
are to beat the Polk County machine this fall.

Matt is concerned about the integrity of our election
process. The advent of same day
registration, loosening of proof of identity laws and requirements surrounding
absentee voting; all timed with the the proliferation of activist organizations
like ACORN - Iowa needs a Secretary of State that is committed to ensuring a
fair election and rooting out voter fraud.

For employers, Matt has pledged to incorporate the federal
E-Verify system into the Secretary of State website so businesses can verify
the citizenship of their workforce. He
also believes technology can streamline business filings to save time and
money. That kind of conservative,
pro-business philosophy is need in the Secretary of State’s office.

David Jamison and Matt Schultz may not be familiar names to Journal readers, but I strongly recommend them to you as you head to the polls on Tuesday.

Ames, Iowa – Jamison for State Treasurer released a new radio spot featuring his three children. The radio ad is titled “Allowance”.

For the past 16 years Dave Jamison has served the taxpayers of Story County as County Treasurer. Jamison has taken it upon himself to protect and manage taxpayer dollars the same way he manages his own family’s budget – with an iron fist.

“There are no better people who can attest to my money management, than my children,” stated Jamison. “I promise to manage and protect, the Iowa taxpayers money the same way I do my own. With sound fiscal record and a commitment to put the people of Iowa first.”

Jamison for State Treasurer Radio Script:

Lauren Jamison: Dave Jamison will be a great State Treasurer for Iowa.

Kelli Jamison: He’s a lifelong Iowan. The only time he left Iowa was to serve our country—in the Marines.

Sam Jamison: As Story County Treasurer, Dave Jamison worked to stop wasteful spending and eliminate red tape.

Kelli Jamison: How do we know all this?

ALL 3 KIDS TOGETHER: Because he’s our dad.

Kelli Jamison: He sure knows the value of a dollar.

Lauren Jamison: But…it would be nice if he raised my allowance.

DAVE: I’m Dave Jamison.
I’m running for Treasurer because Iowans deserve someone who will fight to protect their tax dollars.

And we’ll talk about that allowance later.

Paid for by Jamison for Treasurer
Jamison Stands Out in "The Iowa Republican" Article

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Dave Jamison has raised just about $30,000 for his campaign for State Treasurer and has $7000 cash on hand. His opponent, Jim Heavens, raised less than $3000, but loaned his campaign $25,000. Heavens has $2,228.04 in the bank.

Jamison is the favorite to win the primary. He is better known to Iowa Republicans and is a tireless campaigner. He has also begun to run radio ads in parts of the state.
The Secretary of State race is going to be interesting. Eichhorn is better known, but Council Bluffs City Councilman Matt Schultz is a dynamic and articulate candidate. Eichhorn raised just over $9000 for his campaign, while Schultz raised nearly $12,000. The third candidate in the race, Chris Sanger, has $397 dollars in his campaign account.

The race for the Republican nomination for Secretary of State looks to be a toss up. If Schultz can find a way to run radio ads in the closing days of the campaign, he would be in a good position to win the nomination. If he can’t, then Eichhorn, who unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 2008, will likely get the nod.

Jamison for State Treasurer Campaign Launches Statewide Radio Ad

Jamison talks about his record and how he’ll protect Iowa taxpayers

Ames, IA—Today, Jamison for State Treasurer launched a 30-second radio ad highlighting his family values and position to protect Iowa taxpayers. The ad will run statewide and is the first in a series of ads.

In the ad titled “Families,” Jamison relates state budgeting to how an Iowa family budgets –within their means. State spending has increased over $1 billion in two years, and it’s time for fiscal responsibility and accountability for taxpayer dollars.

Dave Jamison stated, “The time is now to put Iowa first, more importantly Iowa families first. For too long our elected leaders have failed in their role as the taxpayers watchdog – I will always put Iowa first by fighting the tough fiscal decisions, increasing state spending transparency and put an end to lavish contracts for out of state firms.”

Jamison continued, “I have the will and the record to be Iowa’s next State Treasurer. I will always put Iowa First.”

“Families” Script:

Iowa families have to live on a budget — Shouldn’t government?

This is Dave Jamison.

I’m running for State Treasurer because state government is spending too much—with no accountability.

As Treasurer, I’ll protect taxpayer dollars by ending lavish contracts for out-of-state firms.

I’ll increase transparency by putting state spending records online.

And I’ll fight for tough fiscal decisions now—not more borrowing that pushes debt onto our kids.

I’m Dave Jamison — and I’m asking for your vote for State Treasurer.

Ames, Iowa – Today, Jamison for State Treasurer announced former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker as statewide campaign chair.
Dave Jamison said, “I am pleased to have the support and leadership of Matt. As U.S. Attorney, Matt was a government watchdog and worked tirelessly to protect taxpayer dollars. He will be a great asset to my team and I’m proud to have him on board.”

Matt Whitaker said, “Today, I join Dave Jamison in his campaign to become Iowa’s next State Treasurer. Dave has a proven 16 year track record as Story County Treasurer. As a conservative he approached his job as chief finance officer with a keen awareness that public office is a public trust – a belief that public servants have an inherent obligation to continuously strive for improved performance and services.” Whitaker continued, “Dave will serve the people of the great state of Iowa with that same integrity. Iowa needs a watchdog and protector of taxpayer dollars, and that is why I’m supporting Dave Jamison for State Treasurer.”
